Jung, Astrology and Dreams

with
Greg Bogart, PhD, MFT

I do not hesitate to take the synchronistic phenomena that underlie astrology seriously. Just as there is an eminently psychological reason for the existence of alchemy, so too in the case of astrology. Nowadays, it is no longer interesting to know how far these two fields are aberrations; we should rather investigate the psychological foundations on which they rest.

In addition to his interest in dream interpretation, Jung was an avid astrologer, who cast a birth chart for many of his patients. Contemporary astrologers influenced by Jung view the planets and zodiacal signs as symbols of the archetypes, the eternal patterns of transformation-traces of which constantly appear in dreams. This presentation considers how contemplating astrology and dreams together can be a transformative spiritual practice. Dreams and astrological symbols both convey the guidance, the dynamism, and the intentions of the unconscious; both touch us emotionally, evoke pivotal memories, clarify our pressing tasks, and offer glimpses of our emergent potentials.

This talk explores how planetary archetypes manifest in dreams, how dream symbols reflect the symbolism of natal and transiting planets, and how astrological symbols illuminate the deeper meaning of our dreams. Greg will describe the potent methodology of combining the interpretation of dreams with reflection on astrological cycles and symbols.

Within the workshop’s time constraints, a few participants will have the opportunity to briefly share a dream, which we will look at through an astrological lens, in the light of natal chart symbols and current transits.

Please bring a typewritten copy of a recent dream or dream fragment and your natal chart, if you have one. The presenter can also generate a chart and display it during the talk.
